Whoa, Jay is fantastically easy to write. Just take normal dialogue, add a ton of cursing, and follow each and every thought through to the silliest possible logical conclusion.
OK, so it's a little more than that...no, not really.
Bob is slightly more difficult because he doesn't fucking talk. What is he thinking? Who knows? Insert your own thoughts. Bob's characterization is infinitely malleable. Why? Because he's a Mary Sue. He's insightful, an electronic genius, inexplicably attractive to girls and monkeys, and has an enormous dick, something that Kevin Smith admits almost proudly to not having.
Every Askew character can be a mouthpiece. Dante is perfect for veiling your own cynical whining. Randall can be used to air your meandering pop-culture conspiracy theories. I have half a mind to make Dante and Randall sockpuppet journals and spend a little while playing them on [livejournal.com profile] sages_of_chaos, then troll [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck with them.
My love for these characters has been renewed. I want Bob to build a time machine. I want Jay to shoot up with re-agent and turn into a zombie, and then I want to make up something ridiculous about overdoses that will explain him coming back to life for real and not as a zombie (or maybe not). I want to rent "River's Edge" and watch it until I grok Layne so well that I can write a crossover. I want to make Randall rhapsodize over "Army of Darkness" and talk about the Necronomicon. Hell, I already got Nny to kill Jay once (and everybody on the Yahoo list went "whoa, omg, deathfic!" In my defense, he had a perfectly good reason for doing so. A perfectly good Nny reason, anyway. It wasn't so much a "let's have Nny kill Jay" fic as it was "let's have Nny get a Brain Freezy at the Quick Stop, and see what happens" and him killing Jay was just kind of the logical conclusion.) I want to interpret "Dogma" according to Gnostic philosophy...oh wait, already did that. Kind of.
See, this is why I stopped writing J&SB: I ran out of original ideas. I'm not the type of writer that can do a first-time fic or a "Bob leaves, how will Jay cope?" fic over and over, and there's only so many emotional situations you can put these two through. Now that I have accumulated some new fandoms, I can work on that for a while.
It's kind of refreshing to write something that isn't BttF fic, actually. Not that I'm leaving the fandom or anything, but I'm running out of ideas for that, and I think it'll do me good to let the fields lie fallow for a while. (I'm still working on [livejournal.com profile] spacematchbook, when I can. I'm hoping to get it done by February now.) Branching out is a good thing. I've been a one-fandom woman for too long.

Brain Freezy (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=9048&PHPSESSID=5dcd717669151f8a50b57458219ca678). Not my best fanfic, really. But I'm fond of it--it was my first story as Kleenexwoman.
