Checkitout, here’s my horoscope for today:

A fascinating article that you read in the newspaper could inspire you to try to create a mystery story of your own, Rachel. Today your mind is perfectly suited to thinking up twists and turns of plot, and interesting but complex characters. You could tell the story to children, or you might even decide to actually turn it into a novel. Jot down your ideas, and look at them again tomorrow. Then if you want to continue, go for it!

Which is encouraging, because I just now found out that I have to find an article about a scientific discovery, invention, or breakthrough, and write a three-page article about it and its possible implications for the future. It’s due on Friday.
The hard part is not thinking up implications--I can make up futures out of anything, it’s one of my skills as a sci-fi writer. Just ask anyone I’ve ever...well, anyone I’ve ever talked to, really. The hard part is what I’ve set upon myself--I am restricting my possible material to the super-academic journals in the Mary Dow reading room, journals which assume that their readers have been following the latest developments in genetic mosaics or mind-control devices and are able to put the pieces together to figure out how big of a breakthrough any given discovery is. Real science happens a little bit at a time.
I simply can't decide what to write about. New evolutionary theories? Studies of neurocognitive disorders in adolescents with behavioral problems? MARS?

Also, I got my David Brin/1984 paper back…and not only did I get 100% on it, but my teacher told me that I write well beyond my years. Will post it later if anyone wants to read it.

ETA: The library carries not only up-to-date issues of ANALOG but also FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION and there are some new stories by authors I really like. Geoff Ryman has a new story, as does Gardner Dozois, and Paul DiFilippo has a freaking column. WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BEFORE. also, where the hell is ASIMOV'S?

ETA again: "Journal of Popular Culture," Volume 38, #6: "The End of The Eyre Affair: Jane Eyre, Parody, and Popular Culture" by Erica Hateley. Comparies Fforde to Pratchett. I love pseudoacademics.
