plea for resources

kleenexwomanQuick question for those so inclined to answer:
I need a word. Specifically, a word indicating a kind of doll or stuffed animal into which a spirit is summoned/housed. Like in "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac," with the Doughboys (or in I Feel Sick, with the Sickness doll). This is for a fic. I've been using the word "poppet" so far, but that sounds juvenile, and the word "familiar" doesn't cut it. I know there's a word out there, but I can't remember what it is. Anyone have any ideas? Even in a different language or something? My big-ass dictionary isn't helping any.
Also, is it possible for an idea to be too transparent of a metaphor if you got it in an otherwise nonsensical dream, or are dreams just metaphors anyway? I need permission here. Don't know why I feel like I need permission to write my weirder ideas, but I do.
