The lead female role has developed ambiguities - a classic case of finding a new role for her during the course of writing. However I think there is plenty of room for an additional female role (the book is desperately short of good female characters, which is a result of having made the lead roles 19th century academics - women were in short supply amongst them at the time, like it or not) and a feisty, independent minded female character, protesting current gender roles from the freedom of being a minor aristocrat, would be a very interesting addition to the dramatis personae.
If you find the novel interesting enough to inspire you to related research, I'll be grateful for whatever you come up with. Though of course an author can never guarantee to use such research, you have a mind well worthy of being listened to.
