kleenexwoman: A caricature of me looking future-y. (Crazy cat)
It was about 3 or 4 in the morning, and I was lounging on the couch, playing Neopets games doing my homework. Spike jumps onto the windowsill and starts hissing and making this noise like a sick fire engine, and it's a few minutes before I realize that he is hissing at another cat, who is looking into the apartment with a sad little look on his face. I recognize it; it's the cat from the apartment office, who occasionally gets out of the office and hangs around the mailboxes until someone lets him back in.

It's cold out, and I feel sorry for it, but I'm not sure what to do. Seth comes out to investigate Spike's weird noise, and ends up going outside and talking to the kitty. When he opens the door to come back in, the cat tries to squeeeeeeze itself through the crack in the door--it obviously wants to come in. We don't want the cats to fight, so Seth picks it up and holds it for a while (the kitty doesn't mind being held), and then goes with it into the bathroom in case it needs to eat or use the litterbox.

Office Cat investigates the dishes and litterbox, and then goes back to the door and starts poking its paw under it. We hear hisses--it's Spike again, being a jerk. When we put Office Cat into the shower/toilet area and close the door so the kitties can use the litterbox, Giles mostly ignores it, but Spike keeps hissing and pawing at the door. So we take Office Cat into my room and let him chill out in there instead.

Office Cat proves to be quick and incredibly friendly. When we go to pet him, he rolls over and shows his tummy, and wriggles around happily when we pet it. He likes being scratched on the head, and when I stroke his neck or tummy if he's sitting up, he wipes his wet little nose on my hand and bumps his head so that my hand is on his head again. When I get onto the bed to study, he jumps up and comes to snuggle next to me. Then when we hear the other cats scratching at the door, he immediately snuggles down into a small nest of discarded clothes on the floor and keeps watch from his little fort.

Every time I go out of the room to get something, the other kitties are crouched next to the door, watching. I have to nudge them out of the way with my foot. When I go into the living room, they follow me, but halfway down the corridor, one of them always goes back to guard the door. It's a little weird, like a cat security service. After an hour or so, Seth suggests that we put the cat back out so we don't have to worry about the possibility of a cat fight and so Office Cat can find his way back to the office.

Me: But it's cold out there :((((((
Seth: But cats can keep themselves warm! I know! I have four!
Me: BUT KITTY :(((((((

I call the office a few times, and eventually get a lady who says that we can just drop the cat off when the office opens, at nine. I have to go to bed, so Seth ends up letting it out at about 8:30 in the morning and trusting that it will find its way back. I hope it did. It was such a nice, friendly, smart kitty, and it pisses me off a little that they let it out all the time and don't bother to make sure it gets back in.
