if the wizard is a wizard...
Jul. 19th, 2007 01:40 pmWith all the spoilers and hype and OMG POTTEROCALYPSE stuff going on in fandom for the upcoming release of Deathly Hallows, I decided to dip my toe back into the waters of the fandom. Oh, I eased into it carefully...well, by accident, rather. I found my copies of Michael Gerber's rather well-written parodies in the basement, and read them after clearing off the dead spiders. Then I found my copy of Half-Blood Prince in Brian's room and read it for the very first time.
--My god, the print is huge. And the spacing is equally huge. If you squished it down to normal proportions the book would be much easier to carry around.
--J.K. is, if nothing else, very very good at making flashbacks work within the context of a story.
--Everyone is a jerk for badgering Remus until he finally agreed to go out with Tonks. Yes, I know there are bigger things to worry about, but everyone is still a jerk.
--Luna's excellent and should have had more parts.
--In friendslist's opinion, how would Tony Blair have dealt with wizards popping out of the fireplace? How would George W. have done it? What about Harold Saxon? Barack Obama?
I'm now struck with the desire to start playing Mage again, more than anything. (Except I gave away my sourcebook...) I kept making parallels between the game and the book I was reading. (Snape is a Mastigos, Dumbledore is probably an Obrimos, that Felix potion was clearly Acanthus magic, Fenrir Greyback is totally the leader of the Pure, the Ministry of Magic has a whole department for the Guardians of the Veil, blah blah more nerdery. It's been months since I dressed up and played monster. :( I'm having withdrawal. And it makes me rather sad that the next school year is probably the last year I will reasonably be able to LARP with all the same people I've come to know.)
