Does it say in the album notes? I'm pretty sure it's ambiguous in the song, though I think in the Broadway version-- which admittedly doesn't count for much-- it's the father who dies.
I only skimmed it 'cause I've got a headache that threatens whenever I look at big paragraphs, but I will come back to it, because I like the premise very much. ^_^
