I actually gave the Beetlejuice thing some thought, and my conclusion lies in the fact that the love story is not between some young, awkward things that have to overcome something to be together. Instead, it's with Adam and Barbara, a slightly older married couple who's love is quite firmly in place, and any challenge that they encounter, they encounter together, and it doesn't really threaten their love...just their happiness on a different plane. Not quite as appealing to eager little fanwriters, I'd imagine.
