When I had to go over Wagner, the professor played an old comedy routine done by this woman with operatic training. She's sing the leitmotif and joke about it, like going on about the Rheinmaidens swimming. Still swimming. And, yes, they're still swimming about. And the bit about incest, "You can get away with anything in opera as long as you sing it." I think that's the only way I'll ever enjoy Wagner.
